Three-Halves-Harmonic Radiation from Long-Scale-Length Plasmas Revisited

چکیده
Introduction Starting with the very early experiments relating to laser fusion, observations have shown acharacteristic spectral emission near the 312 harmonic of the irradiating laser ~ a v e 1 e n ~ t h . l For simplicity we will name this emission "312 self-emission" to distinguish it from similar spectral features that may be induced by a separate probe beam. This spectral signature was immediately recognized as being related to the underlying t w ~ ~ l a s m o n d e c a ~ ~ ~ ITPD) instability near quarter critical density. The detailed generation mechanism for this emission is, however, still a subject of considerable controversy and active research. This article represents another attempt to explain the detailed origin of this emission and its consequences for diagnostic applications. These conclusions can be succinctly summarized as follows: ( 1 ) The observed threshold for this 312 emission is not a good indicator of the threshold of the underlying TPD instability; (2) the absence of 312 emission is not a reliable indicator of the absence of the TPD instability; and (3) the value of the spectral features as a temperature diagnostic is very limited at best.

Three-halves harmonic emission from femtosecond laser produced plasmas
Measurements of three-halves harmonic radiation (3v0/2) produced by femtosecond, Ti:sapphire laser pulses (<2310 W/cm) in long density scale length plasmas generated from solid aluminum targets are presented. The 3v0/2 emission yield shows excellent agreement with theories of the two-plasmon decay instability in the predominantly linear regime. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.106...
متن کاملPROGRESS IN LASER FUSION 2. D Three-Halves Harmonic Spectra and Self- Focusing in Laser Plasmas
We have recently reported on the spectral characteristics and the generation mechanisms for the harmonic radiation emitted from laserproduced plasmas.' We noted on that occasion that the observed asymmetric splitting of the 3~ , / 2 spectra from UV-laser plasmas (Fig. 16) could not be explained on the basis of a planar plasmaexpansion model. In the preceding article of this review, the theoreti...
متن کاملEffects of laser-plasma interactions on terahertz radiation from solid targets irradiated by ultrashort intense laser pulses.
Interactions of 100-fs laser pulses with solid targets at intensities of 10(18) W/cm(2) and resultant terahertz (THz) radiation are studied under different laser contrast ratio conditions. THz emission is measured in the specular reflection direction, which appears to decrease as the laser contrast ratio varies from 10(-8) to 10(-6). Correspondingly, the frequency spectra of the reflected light...
متن کامل3/2 harmonic generation by femtosecond laser pulses in steep-gradient plasmas.
The onset of an electron parametric instability and 3/2 harmonic generation in variable-scale-length plasmas on solid surfaces using femtosecond pulses is observed. With the intensity approaching 10(18) W/cm(2), the instability threshold is already reached at plasma scale lengths of the order of the laser wavelength. A well-collimated harmonic emission with unusually broad spectrum is obtained.
متن کاملTurbulent Fluctuations with the Electron Gyro-Scale in NSTX Plasmas
Various theories and numerical simulations support the conjecture that the ubiquitous problem of anomalous electron transport in tokamaks may arise from an electron gyro-scale turbulence driven by the electron temperature gradient. To check whether such turbulence is present in plasmas of the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX), measurements of turbulent fluctuations were performed with ...
